life and loves of a freelance art curator

Picture
I was born in 1976 in Ljubljana, Slovenia (Yugoslavia in my birth certificate, so that you get the context of my life being socially formed in the transition from socialism to capitalism, which for me is still hard to grasp)

I earn my living as a curator and writer on contemporary art. My work is really important to me.

I live in Ljubljana with my partner who is a music critic and a translator.

I do believe we have to know a bit about each other so that we can work well. Here goes my recent personal history:

Veljko and I used to live in a romantic but moisty house on a castle hill and watch over the city but when I got pregnant and my gran got Alzheimer’s and went to a nursing home, we moved to her apartment in a block of flats. We used to have a vegetable garden in the midst of a city center and we used to heat our place with a stove. Now there is no garden (but I did cooperate in the project Onkraj gradbišča in 2012, so I did some gardening) and it's warm all the time, due to the public heating system. Win some loose some... But it does have a balcony. The turtles Marx and Ludwig are still with us.

We have a superson Vanja, but also some medical problems since I had a terrible birth experience. Vanja is just great. Check him out here.

With a son now I am a part of a family struggling to make it. as me and my partner were both self-employed at a time when most people are struggling financially and don't understand how culture and art can save your day! In 2013 I will work in a public service institution as a curator. I would want to believe we are independent but you know how that is when you have to offer your knowledge, hands and time for money...

And in 2012 our country was yelling SAVE!!! This year we don't know what to yell any more as we are sinking deeper and deeper into corrupted neoliberalism. My experience thought me that exhibitions are not a thing that is present on most of the peoples priorities lists today. But I do think that my profession is relevant and important and I feel I do it well.

There are different priorities since 2011, as family is always first now. Only later on the list there are work and enjoyment. But they are both stil here.

As my partner and I both work we enjoy a daily struggle about who is allowed to work and who is the babysitter... You can arrange it all you want but when people call and you have deadlines, you just can't make it so that everybody would be happy.  But we get by day by day, trying to have some little pleasures and of course also babysitting is a pure joy when it's not pure hell consisting of screaming and yelling because my boy isn't allowed to put his finger in the socket again and me thinking I really should get some work done...

But still we somehow manage to enjoy the good things in life ... Vanja, chocolate, contemporary art, new movies, old movies, contemporary art, flea markets, travelling, good magazines, music, friends, Lavazza, computers, old fashioned food like our mothers made, pot, books, books and some more books, our turtles Marx and Ludwig, truthfulness, did I mention contemporary art, laziness, True Blood and Mad Man, life, smoking cigarettes and more books, my garden, design...

23 months and the world is at your feet to discover - that's my son! I feel some envy when I see him walk first steps, still everything new and fresh. I feel as my work gives the same feeling when it's good. But big plans and projects have to wait although me and Viktor Bernik were starting to talk about something that sounds good. This year my highlights include preparing an exhibition with Ignacio Uriarte at Škuc, the exhibition about the history of Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic arts at Cankarjev dom and of course my one year lasting employment as a curator-galerist at Mestna galerija Ljubljana.

This web site is a mix of my life and work as they feel as one and the same thing and I like it that way!
